Exynos 8895 vs Snapdragon 835 Comparison: Which processor is better?

Mobile processors continue to evolve and more and more options are available to manufacturers. Although Qualcomm distributes to a wide range of manufacturers, some like Samsung or Huawei, as well as Apple, are still betting on their own hardware.

And in these terms, the most recent are the Snapdragon 835 – by Qualcomm and the Exynos 8895 – by Samsung, with a similar design although there are certain differences in their features.

What differences are there between the Snapdragon 835 and the Exynos 8895?

10nm manufacturing process

The truth is that both processors have an equal manufacturing process and, in broad terms, have similar components and speeds. This manufacturing process is that of 10nm, called as the new generation, leaving behind both the 14nm and 16nm (what they use, for example, the iPhone 7).

This manufacturing model was created by Samsung already in 2016, but had not been used in one of its devices so far. It is, without a doubt, a new step in terms of processors, since it allows more transistors to be integrated in the same space.

That is, more power is generated and energy consumption is improved. In fact, Samsung has launched a series of data in this regard: this new technology allows to integrate 30% more transistors in a physical area of a 14nm chip; and offers up to 27% more power.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 + have in their interior with this new Exynos 8895, and that other devices such as the LG G6 mount the option of Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 835. But, being that way or in another way, which option is better? We compare them, with the details that are available to date, so you can value yourself.

Performance: CPU and GPU

Snapdragon 835 vs Samsung Exynos 8895 3D performance comparison benchmark

With respect to the previous, the Snapdragon 835 offers a performance 20% higher than what already reached the Snapdragon 821. For its part, the Exynos 8895 introduces a ‘power 27% higher than the Exynos 8890 of the previous generation.

And this has been achieved thanks to FinFET (fin field-effect transistor) technology, with a manufacturing process of 10 Nm that both share, both the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895. And another aspect they share are the eight cores in a set that, according to the technical sheet, it should suppose a 40% lower energy consumption for both one and the other.

And in the field of graphic processing, the two also share the support for virtual reality in 4K resolution. The Snapdragon 835 processor comes with the Adreno 540 GPU that should improve its work on 3D rendering over the Snapdragon 821 by 20%. And the Exynos 8895 has a Mali-G71 GPU and a 20-core configuration.

Multimedia: playback and recording

Samsung Exynos 8895 processor the high performance processor ever

Here if there are major differences, and are what will make us see very differentiated hardware in the next high-end smartphones.

Because the Exynos 8895 supports dual main camera configurations with 28 and 16 MP sensors while the Qualcomm option is limited to two 16 MP sensors.

Therefore, although the resolution is not everything, the capabilities of the SoC Exynos 8895 are much broader. In addition to this, the Exynos 8895 is capable of recording video in 4K at 120 fps maximum.

But in the reproduction of multimedia the similarities return, because both support 4K video at up to 60 fps. As for the recording, the differences are substantial because the Snapdragon 835 is limited to the 4K resolution at 30 fps.

And all this above, in addition, combined with an LTE connectivity module that supports a maximum transfer speed of 1 Gbps / 150 Mbps in download and upload, respectively. What is missing, of course, is that there is infrastructure and services that take advantage of these benefits.

Results

After analyzing both processors and checking their results. These results have indicated that the Exynos 8895 processor offers better results in terms of data processing, both in a single core and in multiple cores. Although at the time of graphic processing, the Snapdragon 835 is slightly higher.

Qualcomm 835 processor the best gaming and graphic processor

As for the charge, Samsung has chosen to incorporate the Quick Charge 2.0 into any Galaxy S8 processor, so both processors present very similar results. Even so, the performance observed is that the Snapdragon 835 is somewhat superior to the Exynos 8895 , especially when working with multiple cores.

In the same way, there is a small difference if we compare the power of the Snapdragon 835 with the power of the Exynos 8895. The first one a much higher maximum speed, which translates, in the end, in a higher performance and response.

While it is true that in a generic way these small differences should not cause very extreme experiences, it is quite remarkable that Qualcomm processors, in this case the Snapdragon 835, have better results. And you, in the fight of Snapdragon 835 vs 8895 with which one you stay?

What is Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 ?

The Snapdragon 845 processor is a direct successor to the popular Snapdragon 835 chip from last year and will likely bring improved performance, better energy efficiency and improved image processing.

New generation for Qualcomm’s high-end SoC. The Snapdragon 845 chip highlights new architectures for virtual reality and AI, as well as better connectivity with the X20 modem. We should find this SoC in high-end smartphones presented next year.

Qualcomm unveils its new high-end SoC. If those present at the Snapdragon Tech Summit were unsatisfied during the presentation, a statement from the manufacturer delivers the technical specifications of this Snapdragon 845.

The Snapdragon 845 embeds eight Kryo 385 cores etched in 10 nm clocked up to 2.8 GHz. Qualcomm promises increased performance by 25% compared to the previous generation. An Adreno 630 provides the GPU part, the Spectra 280 Image Signal Processor (ISP) completes the graphic part of the SoC.

Thus, it will support a camera equipped with a double sensor of 16 megapixels or a single sensor of 32, the 4K up to 60 fps and two 2400 x 2400 pixels with 120 fps in the case for example of an integration with a helmet of reality Virtual.

In the field of AI, the group announces support through its Tensorflow Lite Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine SDK and Open Neural Network Exchange, in addition to the classic TensorFlow and Caffe frameworks.

As for security, the Snapdragon 845 introduces an isolated hardware subsystem called the Secure Processing Unit (SPU). It is designed to “add safe-box features to Qualcomm’s existing layers of mobile security solutions”.

To 5G
Side connectivity, WiFi 802.11ad and Bluetooth 5 are in the game. Above all, we go from the X16 modem to the X20. At a press briefing on 5G last week in Paris, Laurent Fournier, CEO of Qualcomm France, explained that this X20 modem must be embedded in the products announced in 2018, so we must expect that The first smartphones, even tablets or PCs, designed on the Snapdragon 845 are presented at the beginning of the year at the CES and the MWC.

For the record, the X20 will support up to 5 aggregated 20 MHz bands for 1.2 Gb / s peaks in downstream rate.

And we are still in the 4G. Its successor, the X50 modem will be 5G NR, based on the standard defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). It currently peaks at 1.2 Gb / s during PoC led by Qualcomm with ZTE and China Mobile. The X50 should be aligned with the premium smartphones introduced in 2019.
